Fly in the Ointment

F2020

Its April of 2020 and Day 06 of A to Z challenge. This year, I am doing Metaphors. Be it a movie, song, painting, book, idiom, etc. I plan to give a perspective to it with an explanation and a 8 line poem.

Metaphor: Fly in the Ointment

It’s an idiomatic expression that signifies something small that spoils the whole. The one small flaw that comes to light to spoil a faultless plan. It’s the ‘but’ we talk about.

The idiom dates back to ancient times when ointments was not just for medical purposes but more likely to be creams, oils and cosmetics. Ointment was a substance that one used to anoint (rub). I am using this metaphor for self-doubts that spoil the plan. Not just the plans though.

Poem:
The stories have to be lived,
For everything was once an etc.
Should I smile and hello?
As small like that,
Is this worth Turing award?
As bigger than that.
But, I am my,
Fly in the ointment.

I don’t know what, what to call it, but it stands in between. I am not sure if I have to cross it by thrashing like to an enemy or caring like to a love.

  1. WOW!!! I can relate that there has been many a time I was ‘the Fly in my own Ointment’…..sometimes I just have to step out of my own way to move forward…..
