The Everyday Present

Note:
This story was written for a competition which asked to pen down a 1000 words flash fiction on ‘memories associated with your favorite book’.

“There is nothing more beautiful than painting the world with words”

Mr. P had one aspiration in his life – To strive and exhibit his best in whichever profession he opts to. The motto was to deliver the best of worlds and never leave a grime to complain. Satisfaction, which is what, mattered the most. The job satisfaction stood on top of the life pyramid pushing down the financial growth to the secondary hierarchy.  Mr. P knew life reveals in various grey shades and heartily welcomed every hues of it.

With several options in hand, his family situations made it inevitable to pick a job which would come with a ‘stay home’ option.  He opted to be a professor. He always wanted to be one since his childhood with many teachers in his family tree. Now the constraints had forced the obvious as an obligatory option.

It was a not a cake walk. Presenting the concepts to a class full of students in the most understandable and effective way was a continuous challenge. It called for an unremitting dedication.

A teacher effects eternity; He can never tell where his influence stops
– Henry Adams

When he used to teach in the class, he used to mentally hop, jump and dance with the concepts. He wanted the students to feel them and have the Goosebumps of amazement. He wanted to connect. Connect through the materials that were jazzing in the book. He wanted his students to see how the concepts rejoiced in the books through words and figures and dance along with the harmony.

In fourth year of his teaching career, he meets this student who sits in the first bench with a beguiling voice. She had a tone which would put her classmates to laugh, at-least to a handful, if not all. She used to ask questions until things logically made meaning to her. If she ever made any enemies then one substantial reason would be that she was way better than her peers.

It took two classes for the professor to have his favorite student. Not that she was the first one in four years. There were a few in every batch. But this girl was different. She was perhaps the favorite among all.

***

18th June 2016, the batch graduates and as the caps go high in the hoopla ceremony, the students completing their engineering education leap with excitement all ready to enter the professional world. It’s a general tradition for students to receive a ‘graduation present’. But that graduation professor received a present.  He uncovered it with lots of surprise to find a book – “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom.

The first page of the book read:

To the best Teacher in the world

With Best Regards
TomBoy (Your favorite student)

The professor had not heard of the book yet. He decided to give a sneak-peak into the book that night. He had read five pages and could not stop the book. It was early morning 5.00am and he had finished the book, entirely.  The book was not read in one go. There were certain stops to halt and ponder. Some pages got tears. Some gave thoughts to look back and evaluate life.

Have I celebrated life this far? Could I have been better?

Professor had a mini library at home and this book, the one with life lessons from Morrie and Mitch was going to be his favorite. He was sure nothing else could replace this one easily, being so much close to heart and profession, gifted by his favorite student.

Then the professor thought, “Oh snap! Wait. May be there is already one. The lessons professor had learnt from his favorite student and the lessons she had taken away from his teachings”. They were maybe on equal wavelength, if not more!

It was from her he had learnt to write to ‘life’s special people’ on their birthdays. At first the professor had thought it felt good to receive writings on birthdays. But soon he learnt he was wrong, as it was double the happiness to write one.   Since then, he had made it out as a habit to write. It was from her he had learnt to give the cent percent to current work; no matter how much tiring was the previous work. It was from her he had learnt that, smile and being kind propagates to a larger distance than actually thought. It was from her he had learnt how to be a teacher’s favorite student.

All that the professor did was to teach to the best efforts he could and do his duty right. He was already getting the salary for the work he did. The compliment from the students was an additional bonus which nothing could replace. Apart from her amazing handwriting she also had an in-born talent to making pretty cards that fetched smiles from the receiver. She had prepared hand written letters and cards which were presented at occasions through the timeline of the program to the professor. The professor had treasured the cards which spoke about how dedicated he was.

After graduation, she had moved to finally catch her dreams of being an IAS officer and the professor moved to get his research degree. Both of their journeys had ups and downs. Though there was never an explicit mention, there were mails which kept updated about the ongoing efforts and dedicated work from either of them. While they both now struggle to achieve their dreams, they serve as a constant motivation to each other.

It is usual for a professor to find a favorite student. But it is blessing to find a teacher in a favorite student.

Is it not a god’s way of keeping touch with his favorite people?

The take away from the book, ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’, “Learn how to die, and you will learn how to live” however, is going to be a never ending inspiration.

Normal Isn’t A Thing!

normal-quote

Call it a pain,
Call it a bother,
Don’t do it the usual way,
Normal isn’t a thing.

The feel good of stand out,
Make it a little unusual,
With a little extra exertion,
Normal isn’t a thing.

Listener could jump away,
Or get lost in the crowd,
Unnoticed in the jumble,
Normal isn’t a thing.

A little divergent thinking,
A little more deliberation,
A little further dedication,
Normal, and still a thing!

Mock, Stalk and Quarrel – Review

msq-cover

It is a collection of 29 satirical tales varying and touching every aspect of social order. I am pretty sure the team would have had a lot of discussion and tuff-time on placing and ordering the stories. Each story on an average ranges from 8 to 10 pages.

There is satire touched at various levels. Some bring smiles throughout and some at the end. Some articulate the message throughout and some at the end. Here are my favorite five, numbered in the order of my preference:
1. The Leopard’s Tail by Kavitha Murali
2. A Serious Confession by Aryan Huria
3. Darkness Reigns at the Foot of the Lighthouse by Radhika Maira Tabrez
4. In Search of Mr Perfect by Piyusha Purnima Vir
5. Girl Talk by Kirthi Jayakumar

‘The Leopard’s Tail’ had me hooked from the very first paragraph. Brilliant Read. All in all, it was a good and fun read. Kudos to all the Authors and the Editor! This book is going to stand and smile on my bookshelf, calling me to pick up and read, yet again, every time!

The Way I See It!

Indian Bloggers

From this May I have started guest blogging on Racing Against Time, blog run by Jyotirmoy Sarkar. Thank you so much Jyotirmoy for this opportunity. This is fun.  The plan is to do two poems per month.

The first one was posted on May 14 titled: The Way I See It.

I am also sharing the poem here:

They said,
It is a chaos.
Crowded confusion,
Mixed variation,
Hurdles for solution,
Struggling resolutions.
But I see a,
Celebration of mess.

They said,
It is a struggle.
Smiles and cries,
Unsaid sacrifices,
Goals and more,
Never ending sea shore.
But I see a,
Celebration of Life.

He has an awesome blog out there. Do reach out!

We talk Rules and Shapes

Indian Bloggers

rules-and-shape

First the rules are formed and then the shape is assigned. This process makes it inevitable that when the shape is seen the rules are involuntary. The rules are anytime identifiable by the shape revealed.

Say for Example:
When we have visible mass of minute liquid droplets, frozen crystals or particles suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body, we call the things that adhere to such rules as ‘clouds’.

Now all that said, have you ever seen a water droplet claiming it to be a cloud? Would you take that service?

This is interesting!
Wearing a white coat does not make anyone a doctor. A monkey cannot call itself a gorilla. One has to understand that there are rules. One has to understand and undergo certain transformation to become one. The process is that: first the properties and then the dressing, that how it goes and it must.  It kind of feels funny if the process reverses its order when the shape is first taken and then struggling through entire life to master the rules.

This applies to everything and every tip and toe that we see. Do I call myself a reader and then read books or do I read and then call myself a reader?

I look back at many things and ponder what was the right way and did I do them right! Do I have the right culture?

A to Z Challenge 2017 – Reflections

Indian Bloggers

May 8th is the official day to do the reflections post for the A to Z challenge and I have patiently waited for this day.

survivor-atoz [2017] v1

This is the first year I did A to Z Challenge and ask me not how happy I was and I am. It was A to Z of joy! My theme for the challenge was Idiom a day and an 8 line poem for it. I would like to sum up the same way in the reflections post.

Idiom: Happy Camper

Meaning: to be content or satisfied with what is happening in the life and to have no complaints

Poem:
Pick an idiom for the day,
Look out what it has to say,
Then the thoughts rhyme and mix,
Poem gets the words all fix,
Happy comments all around,
Thank you’s, wishes, gather and surround,
Isn’t it a lucky bumper,
A to Z, a happy camper.

My heartfelt thanks to all who followed my challenge posts throughout the month. Your presence, likes, comments and thoughts made this challenge more satisfying and healthy.

I have put all the challenges together in a page here: A to Z Challenge 2017

Also made an ebook putting them all together which can be downloaded here: A to Z – Poem for an Idiom

Impatient Me

Indian Bloggers

roots

There was no magic,
It was just a tragic,
Stumbled over a hurdle,
Then it there repeats,
Deep it then sinks,
Plans to overwrite my existence,
But hey,
I hate to see myself so,
Impatient me!

My roots have been shaken,
Body shattered,
My boots have been lost,
Legs falling apart,
But I will stand still,
Bury my roots again,
Stand like never before,
I don’t like lukewarm,
Impatient me!

Pathetic time was mine,
Body cries was nine,
Shivering over the nights,
Waiting for the bright,
My shoulders need me,
My will power calls me,
I am going to shine again,
Trust me,
I am Impatient!

Note: This poem is an extract from my work-in-progress novel where the character is looking for self motivation after a set of horrible life events.

What A Month Can Do!

april-icon

I am going to remember April of 2017 for numerous fabulous reasons. This month was special in its own way, in its own kind, spreading across my work of interests.

The month started with an announcement that said I had won a writing contest winning a book prize. In a week, the book: Mock, Stalk and Quarrel was delivered to home and I am going to read that this may. I did finish reading When Breath becomes Air in April.

The A to Z A to Z - LRchallenge.  It was ‘wow’. Had not expected the challenge would be this fun. This is the first time my blog had  28 posts published in one month.

All the A to Z prompts have been combined into an ebook which is a FREE download and can be found here: A to Z – Poem for an Idiom.

This month has also got me few interview options and guest blogging opportunities.

One of my poems got selected to be published in an Anthology run by Twin City Poets, Hyderabad. It was happiness to see the mail. Expecting the book to be out sometime soon and details of it are to be known yet.

My technical blog: PH Bytes had its 100th blog post. It was fun. I do write ten technical posts per month and writing 100th did feel good. My 100th post was a note on my research work that is being carried out for my PhD. The first implementation version of work was released and here are the details: Knit Engine Ver 0.1. The post gives an idea about work and release details. This did take a lot of effort and numerous sleepless nights.

Participated in Camp NaNoWriMo and completed novel editing work of 30 hours that I had scheduled.  Received the winner certificate and satisfaction, it is!

camp-nano-certificate

Those 30 hours were used in writing a concept note of my novel and editing of first four chapters. Those were submitted to a publisher and in five days I got back a reply that the plot is interesting and they would like to see full manuscript. This was happiness. Like literally jumping happiness. No matter what the future results are, would accept it gracefully and learn through the way. Have planned to submit full script by May 10.

As a surprise came reviews of my 3 ebooks by Swati . My gratitude for writing such beautiful reviews. Here they are:
PhD – the Messy Desk : Review
100 Haiku: Review
Run – The secret Destination: Review

April got me 42 ratings  and 8 text reviews on my Goodreads profile.

One of my best friends got married and we had a friend’s reunion. Most importantly, the month had a travel which I would find difficult to forget. It was the best three days ever. Like the best. Like the best ever! All of this along with regular routines of personal and professional things.

Thank you every one for all the support. I need to catch up with a lot of blogs and on it! May the ‘May’ keep the force!
