Latvia – Art Nouveau

It’s April of 2021 and Day 12 of the A to Z challenge. This year, I am doing the theme – “Travel the World.” I am visiting countries from A to Z and presenting stories with 8 line poems.

Day 12 Country: Latvia

Latvia with high-income advanced economy, ranks high in Human Development Index. Riga is capital of Latvia and is known for Art Nouveau architecture. The name “Art Nouveau” is French for “new art.” Approximately, one third of Art Nouveau architecture buildings of the world are in Riga and constructions date 1904 to 1914. The art is characterized by flowing lines and patterns of flowers and leaves. Artists drew inspiration from both organic and geometric forms. The Art Nouveau architecture is further classified as: Eclectic, Perpendicular, National Romantic; and Neo-Classical. Below is a picture of a building on Alberta iela.

Poem:

The old,
Will inspire new,
Ideologies,
Bend, break, heal,
The art and the artist,
Will leave and live,
Keep your eyes,
Open or shut.

Be open to see the beauty. Else, you will neither see the beauty, nor the beast.

  1. Such a pretty building. I admit I love ancient architecture more but this is cute too. Classy and elegant. Wasn’t aware that Latvia was famous for ‘new art’ architecture. Got to know something new today. 🙂
It’s a cycle- from old to new to old and so on… life goes on…

  2. Lovely Latvia! When I was a girl in school I had 2 Latvian friends: Mirza & Ingrid…
Their parents & Grandparents came to Canada for a ‘better’ life…..As I was only a child I never asked why they emigrated from Latvia. They used to show me photos of their homeland & there were some lovely buildings & parks.
Both girls were VERY artistic & I loved their paintings alot.
I lost touch with Mirza & Ingrid when we went off to different High Schools….
Now to your poem~~totally lyrical & very reflective of Latvia & its’ culture Prakash!
