Meaning: broadly accurate guide or principle, based on practice rather than theory

Poem:
Between he and she,
Amid the fights,
Wrongs and the rights,
Amid the joys,
Hops and the cries,
In a successful marriage,
Rule of thumb is,
Fingers are uneven.
