In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Truth or Dare.”
Is it possible to be too honest, or is honesty always the best policy?

Honesty always comes with varying flavors of those kinds which may take a while to realize. Or at its best we may never realize. We may never realize that,

  • With Honesty, we have said the truth which was also accompanied with few little lies, those lies which made the truth look clear.
  • With Honesty, we have performed the duty today, only to spare the time for something else which we have loved to do.
  • With Honesty, we have accepted all that we did only to keep ourselves happy then, if not now.
  • With Honesty, we have a plan only to cover up the unplanned so far with the deadlines approaching.
  • With Honesty, we have alarmed a praise only to get similar in return.
  • With Honesty, we have read literature’s on being honest, only to fit them at right places if not all.

Was it all pretending Honesty, by being a little Dishonest? Or was it an Honest Lie?

I think. I still think. And its on!

    Somehow point number one reminds me of this quote from “importance of being earnest”
    “The truth is rarely pure and never simple”
    So, yes few lies also accompany an honest truth!

  2. we raised our daughter with the goal of teaching her to always be honest. in church one sunday she marched up to an older member and announced, ‘you’re fat’. there’s a line between honesty and being mean; between speaking one’s truth and deciding on merely thinking it; between honesty and knowing anything we say is subjective and never a full understanding. this is a very interesting and useful post, and thank you for sharing it with us today.

  4. This is a little tricky question. While honesty is said to be the best policy and I think it is in the long run, but truth is not always comfortable and may not always be desirable . The perception of truth is also relative based on one’s understanding.

  5. Excellent topic Prakash!
    I think we must temper honesty with gentleness. Sometimes we have to omit some of the ‘brutal’ honesty when we know how the ‘honest truth’ will hurt another. It can be like walking a tightrope!
    My Father always told me to be honest as long as I did not affront or hurt someone’s feelings. He was the Master at NOT upsetting people with the truth…..I am not so gifted altho I try my best.

  6. Wow, I think this is a difficult post to write because as much as we claim to love honest talks, sometimes, we just not ready for them, that’s when the little lies come in. You did a good job writing this.
